“If you ask my dad, he would say Maradona” | Pablo Zabaleta weighs in on Maradona vs Messi debate

With the 2022 World Cup in Qatar less than two months away when the host nation clashes with Ecuador on 20 November at the newly-constructed Al-Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, Lionel Messi will embark on what is likely his final appearance at the World Cup in what has been a career for the ages.

Now 35 but still at the top of his game, there are few that expect the diminutive genius to have another chance at lifting the World Cup for the first time across a nineteen-year stint at the very top of the beautiful game that has included a combined 34 major trophies for club and country and seven Ballon d’Or wins.

In what has been billed by some as Messi’s best chance to win the World Cup at the head of an Argentina squad under Lionel Scaloni that finally can boast a well-balanced team with talent to spare across all areas of the park while avoiding defeat in 34 consecutive fixtures, it would be an end to an international career befitting one of the games greatest ever players.

But for many, the debate regarding whether or not Messi can call himself Argentina’s greatest son ahead of the late Diego Maradona continues, one that former Argentine international Pablo Zabaleta has weighed in on.

Zabaleta, who now works at ESPN covering La Liga after his retirement from football in 2020, offered his take on the endless debate and sides with his former teammate over the man who is largely responsible for one of Argentina’s two World Cup wins in a tournament that was infamously defined by the iconic “Hand of God” moment irrespective to Maradona’s brilliant displays in 1986.

“Football was different in the 80s or 90s. For me, Messi is slightly different than Maradona. But, I know probably, if you ask my dad, he would say Maradona was the best. Not because I play with Messi or because I am a friend of him or something like that, but I think what I have seen from Messi doing for ten, fifteen years, and he is still producing some great moments of football at the age of 35, that is, you know, Fantastic.”

“So that’s why. I know Maradona was a genius, we were still watching clips of Maradona for years, but I think what Messi has done for ten or fifteen years is simply amazing.”

And if both careers are stacked against one another side by side, Zabaleta certainly does have a point.

At the time of writing, both players featured for Argentina for seventeen years, with Maradona appearing for La Albiceleste from 1977 until 1994 while Messi made his debut in 2005 and remains active currently in 2022. But despite having the same length of service, Messi has scored nearly three times the goals for Argentina by comparison (90 to 34) in 73 appearances more than Maradona but boasts a better strike rate of 0.55 to 0.37.

Another aspect of the debate boils down to the level of players the pair have lined up alongside at the international level. Many suggest that Maradona carried Argentina to glory in 1986 despite featuring in a squad that included Daniel Passarella and Oscar Ruggeri. But Messi has plied his trade for years at the international level with a cadre of players that have ascended to the pinnacle of the game in Europe, with Javier Mascherano, Javier Zanetti, Ángel Di María, Sergio Agüero, Gonzalo Higuaín, Lautaro Martínez, and Paulo Dybala all long-term national team colleagues.

Like the days of Maradona, Argentina had long deployed itself in a manner to make the mercurial ten its focus and always to its detriment as the national team continued to fall short of the mark on the World Stage, with Messi reaching the World Cup finals just once (2014) while losing out to Germany whereas Maradona did not fail at the final hour 28-years before.

But when club careers are compared, Messi owns the lay of the land, bagging 390 goals more than Maradona and achieving a strike rate of 0.81 compared to Maradona’s 0.52 while outstripping Maradona’s trophy haul by a whopping 25.

Regardless of an undeniable club career that will go down as one of the best in the history of the sport, should Messi fail to lift the World Cup in Qatar, many will still feel that he will remain in Maradona’s shadow due to an inability to lift his nation on his shoulders when it mattered most.

The key change Mason Mount made for England Graham Potter needs at Chelsea vs Crystal Palace

 

Mason Mount's first goal of the season came against Germany for his country and ended an eight-match scoring drought in all competitions for the Englishman this season.

In a frustrating period for both club and country, Mount's levels have dropped off and he has found himself with serious competition for a starting spot at both Chelsea and England. Mount was dropped for Thomas Tuchel's last league game in charge, a 2-1 victory over West Ham at the start of the month, after failing to score or assist in his five previous matches.

It's a barren run that has coincided with England faltering ahead of the winter World Cup and Chelsea parting with Tuchel, now bringing in Potter, and the new manager has been shown the way to keep Mount's form up.

With the second half equaliser against Germany, making the game 2-2 in a dramatic three-goal fightback in 12 minutes, Mount helped to transform the game in a whirlwind period. His introduction for the final 25 minutes was his last chance to pledge a case for a starting role when Gareth Southgate's tournament starts against Iran on November 24.

Mount couldn't have done much more and left with a goal fitting of the occasion, arguably matching Kai Havertz's earlier stunner with his own perfectly placed finish. Potter will have been watching on with glee as his stars stole the show and one of Chelsea's most important players found the spotlight again.

It was something that Ian Wright loved about Mount's game, the explosive anger that came from him after coming on, and is exactly what Potter needs to channel in his 23-year-old star to get him firing in blue once more.

"I love the vexed Mason Mount," Wright said after the match. "I like the Mount that came, the vexed Mason Mount!" the former Arsenal forward told The Ringer.

For the first time since becoming a true first team regular for England or Chelsea, Mount's standards have drastically risen and he is now judged alongside the best players in the league after finishing with double figures in goals and assists last term.

Now he is off the mark Potter will want to keep Mount's energy and enthusiasm in anyway possible, starting with it being evident in the trip to Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Cody Gakpo: Leeds chief Victor Orta offers reason for failed pursuit as he names Leeds signing who will ‘surprise’

Leeds director of football Victor Orta has spilled the beans on his club’s failure to convince PSV to sell Cody Gakpo on transfer deadline day – but reckons one of the Whites’ summer signings is destined for big success.

The Netherlands attacker finds himself a man in demand after a brilliant years in the Eredivisie. Gakpo smashed in 21 goals and weighed in with 15 assists last season to underline his qualities. And he has taken that on to another level already this season, scoring nine times and adding six assists from just eight appearances.

As such, it’s little wonder to see Gakpo as a player in enormous demand. Manchester United were the first to make inroads into his signature, even agreeing personal terms with the player. But the Red Devils backed out of the move once a deal for Antony edged closer.

Southampton were the next to try their hand, offering PSV a club-record deal in the process. That was not enough, though, to consider PSV to sell.

Fewer clubs came closer than Leeds, however, to landing Gakpo. With Orta boarding a flight to Eindhoven on the penultimate day of the window, if all went to plan, he’d have returned to Yorkshire upon his private jet with Gakpo in tow.

Sadly for Leeds, Orta returned home on his own, with Louis van Gaal seemingly having a role in the Whites’ failure to sign him.

As it turns out, Leeds’ offer did not quite tempt PSV into selling their star man. Per their Marcel Brands, Leeds’ offer was not quite enough in terms of the way the deal was structured.

Orta defends PSV right to keep Cody Gakpo

Discussing Leeds’ summer bid of £26.6m (€30m) up front and £11.3m (€13m) in add-ons, Brands hints a restructured offer would force a re-think.

On reports of a €43m  bid from Leeds, PSV chief Brands told Voetbal International: “It was €30m plus €13m, of which only €2m were realistic.

“For example, we would get €6m if they made it to the Champions League.

“Bonuses are only good for me if they are realistic. This was the very best offer and we all said no to that.”

Speaking for the first time about that failure, Orta has spoken to the Daily Telegraph.

“We tried with Cody Gakpo. I respect his decision not to come to Leeds. And I also put myself in the shoes of PSV and I understand they couldn’t find a replacement at the last minute,” he said.

Leeds also missed out on Bamba Dieng on deadline day with doubts over the player’s fitness ultimately seeing the move breakdown.

However, Orta believes the one man they did land on deadline day – Italy striker Wilfried Gnonto – is destined for big things.

“We couldn’t reach an agreement for Bamba Dieng either. In the end we decided on Wilfried Gnoto, who I think is going to surprise.

“He can play inside, outside, he has already made his debut for the Italian national team and has a mentality that is overwhelming. We have to be very calm, but I think the team will not be short of goals.”

Leeds chief happy with transfer window

Orta, who has since been linked with Chelsea’s sporting director vacancy, insists Leeds can be happy with their business.

After going dangerously close to relegation last year, the club decided big changes were needed. To that end, they sacrified their two biggest stars in Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha. That cash was then used to make nine new signings.

Five of those have already strongly featured this season. And Orta reckons Leeds’ squad is better equipped for the challenges ahead.

“The first thing I would say is that 90 per cent of the signings came in before pre-season in Australia, and that’s valuable.

“The players have adapted quickly. We sold two players – Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha. Then we brought in five others and three young players with a lot of future. Frankly, we’ve gained depth on the bench, we have more alternatives.”

Honestly speaking, Orta is right. Leeds have a much better squad this season with a far stronger bench typifying their stronger options. Marc Roca and Tyler Adams have been signed with £12m to spare for the deal that saw Phillips sold.

And in Luis Sinisterra, they have a star winger who looks more than capable of filling Raphinha’s void.

Jordan Henderson: Ada yang Bisa Main Sampai 37 Tahun, Saya Juga Bisa

UEFA Nations League - Satu-satunya pertanyaan kepada pesepakbola profesional saat usianya sudah di atas 30 tahun adalah soal fisiknya. Gelandang Liverpool Jordan Henderson juga ditanyai begitu, tetapi dia merasa masih bisa bugar hingga lima tahun ke depan.

Usia Henderson saat ini sudah 32 tahun. Kontraknya di Liverpool juga masih sampai 2025 atau tiga tahun lagi. Sampai saat ini, Henderson masih jadi jangkar di lini tengah The Reds.

Tidak hanya di klub, di timnas Inggris pun ternyata dia masih diandalkan. Henderson yang awalnya tidak masuk dalam pemanggilan timnas Inggris untuk UEFA Nations League mendapat berkah dari cederanya gelandang Manchester City Kalvin Philips.

Manajer timnas Inggris Gareth Souhtgate langsung memanggil Henderson untuk mengisi kekosongan lini tengah tersebut. Henderson pun merasa siap untuk membela The Three Lions lagi.

Masih Bugar

Terkait pemanggilannya ini, Henderson merasa masih bugar. Ia mencontohkan ada beberapa pemain yang bisa bermain lebih lama dari dirinya. Jadi dia merasa kondisinya sekarang juga masih kuat-kuat saja.

“Saya melihat ada beberapa pemain yang masih bermain di level internasional pada usia 36 atau 37 tahun. Jadi itu tergantung pada bagaimana saya merasakan kondisi fisik saya,” ujarnya dilansir dari The Mirror.

“Sementara saya sekarang masih sangat baik. Saya bahkan merasa musim lalu saya memainkan lebih banyak pertandingan daripada siapapun di Eropa.”

Masih Dipercaya

Henderson pun membusungkan dadanya terkait pemanggilannya ke timnas ini sebagai bukti bahwa ia masih dipercaya. Usianya yang sudah 32 tahun bukan jadi kendala terbesar.

“Secara fisik saya tidak ada masalah dan saya senang bisa berada di sini bersama Inggris. Jadi jelas bukan itu [fisik] masalahnya,” kata dia.

“Saya ingin terus berada di sini dan saya ingin menunjukkan bahwa saya dapat membantu tim ini jadi sukses. Sampai perubahan itu terjadi, tidak ada alasan untuk memikirkan pensiun,” kata dia lagi.

Bukan Ajang Terakhir

Timnas Inggris sendiri sampai saat ini belum menentukan siapa saja pemain yang akan dipanggil ke Piala Dunia 2022. Walaupun sejumlah laporan mengklaim bahwa Henderson masih masuk dalam rencana Inggris.

Jika memang dipanggil atau tidak, Henderson menegaskan bahwa ajang Piala Dunia 2022 itu bukan jadi ajang terakhirnya di level internasional bersama Inggris.

“Saya harap, sih bukan jadi yang terakhir. Saya masih merasa baik. Tapi saya tidak akan melihat terlalu jauh ke depan. Saya rasa juga tidak perlu hal itu. Tapi jelas Piala Dunia ini adalah peluang besar yang harus dimanfaatkan,” tandas dia.

Butuh Assist? Panggil Kevin De Bruyne

Manchester City menang 3-0 di kandang Wolverhampton pada pekan ke-8 Premier League 2022/2023, Sabtu (17/9/2022). Kevin De Bruyne tidak menyumbang gol, tetapi merancang dua assist.

Hasil BRI Liga 1: Ciro Alves On Fire, Persib Bandung Lumat Barito Putra 5-2

 

Persib Bandung memetik kemenangan besar di pekan ke-10 BRI Liga 1 2022/2023. Berhadapan dengan Barito Putera, Maung Bandung menang dengan skor telak 5-2.

Gol-gol kemenangan Persib dicetak oleh brace Ciro Alves dan masing-masing satu gol dari David Da Silva, Nick Kuipers dan Henhen Herdiana. Sementara Barito mampu membalas melalui gol Buyung Ismu dan Kahar Muzakkar.

Bermain di kandang sendiri, Persib Bandung langsung tancap gas sejak awal. Baru lima menit laga berjalan, David Da Silva berhasil membuka keunggulan, memanfaatkan umpan silang Henhen Herdiana yang salah diantisipasi barisan pertahanan Barito. Skor berubah menjadi 1-0 untuk keunggulan Persib.

Gol David da Silva ini membuat Persib semakin bersemangat untuk menyerang. Barito Putera juga mencoba untuk memberikan perlanwanan.

Di menit ke-30 Persib sukses menggandakan keunggulan. Berawal dari pergerakan Rachmat Irianto di sisi kanan, ia melepaskan umpan akurat kepada Ciro yang menembak bola. Tembakan pertamanya mengenai barisan pertahanan Barito, namun bola muntah berhasil ia ceploskan ke gawang. Skor berubah menjadi 2-0 untuk keunggulan Persib.

Dua menit sebelum babak pertama berakhir, Persib kembali menambah keunggulan. Kali ini Marc Klok sukses mengirimkan bola ke Ciro di sisi kanan, sang penyerang masuk menusuk dan melepaskan bola ke gawang Barito dan menjadi gol. Skor berubah menjadi 3-0 untuk keunggulan Persib.

Meski unggul 3-0 tidak membuat Persib puas. Dua menit berselang giliran Nick Kuipers yang mencatatkan namanya di papan skor setelah sepak pojok Marc Klok diteruskan Rachmat Irianto dan kemudian disundul oleh Ciro. Skor 4-0 menutup jalannya pertandingan di babak pertama.

Babak Kedua

Tertinggal 4-0 di babak kedua tidak membuat Barito Patah arang. Anak asuh Vitor Tinoco itu langsung tancap gas sejak babak kedua dimulai.

Benar saja, di menit ke-56 Laskar Antasari berhasil mencetak gol pertama mereka di laga ini. Buyung Ismu berhasil mencatatkan namanya di papan skor setelah umpan silang Nazar Nurzaidin ditanduk sempurna dan masuk ke gawang Reky Rahayu. Skor berubah menjadi 4-1.

Gol Buyung ini membuat Barito kian bersemangat. Di menit60 Kahar Muzakkar berhasil menceploskan bola muntah hasil tembakan Mike Ott ke gawang Reky Rahayu. Skor berubah menjadi 4-2 berubah menjadi keunggulan Barito.

Sadar Barito mulai membangun momentum, Persib langsung bereaksi. Di menit 68 Henhen Herdiana melepaskan tembakan mendatar keras di sisi kanan dan bola masuk ke gawang Barito. Skor berubah menjadi 5-3.

Barito sebenarnya punya kesempatan emas untuk menambah keunggulan setelah Henhen Herdiana melakukan pelanggaran di kotak terlarang. Namun sayang Renan Silva yang ditunjuk sebagai algojo menendang bola terlalu keras sehingga bola melambung di atas mistar gawang Persib.

Jual beli serangan terus terjadi, namun skor 5-2 tidak berubah sehingga Persib Bandung berhasil mengamankan tiga poin di laga ini. Berkat tambahan poin itu Persib menempati peringkat delapan dengan raihan 16 poin sementara Barito Putera harus puas berada di peringkat 17 dengan raihan empat poin.

Di Tangan Erik Ten Hag, Manchester United Bereksperimen dengan Dua Taktik Baru

 

Kemenangan Manchester United atas Sheriff Tiraspol pada laga kedua Grup E Liga Europa 2022/2023 menyisakan banyak kekaguman. Salah satunya taktik baru yang diterapkan Erik Ten Hag di pertandingan tersebut.

Man United awalnya memulai laga dengan kekuatan penuh. Tidak ada yang menarik dari susunan sebelas pertamanya, pun soal pemilihan formasinya.

Namun di tengah pertandingan, Ten Hag mengubah taktik yang dipakainya. Perubahan tersebut menyasar pada perpindahan posisi Tyrell Malacia jadi bek kanan dan Jadon Sancho jadi penyerang tengah.

Hasilnya tidak buruk-buruk amat. Man United akhirnya menang 2-0 atas Sheriff di Stadion Zimbru, Moldova, Kamis (15/9/2022) malam WIB.

Penyerang Tengah

Jika melihat proses gol Sancho, ia tidak murni bergerak dari sisi sayap, tetapi di wilayah lapangan yang lebih ke tengah. Dalam beberapa kesempatan, Sancho juga jadi ujung tombak lini depan Man United.

"Kami punya satu contoh bagus di pertandingan. Saat Jadon [Sancho] mencoba mengkreasikan peluang kepada Bruno, dia bermain di posisi penyerang tengah," ujar Ten Hag dilansir dari Manchester Evening News.

"Kami mencetak gol yang saya rasa cukup bagus bersama Jadon. Jika kami terus melanjutkan kualitas ini dan kuantitasnya juga, maka kami sedang di jalur yang benar."

Bek Kanan

Ten Hag juga mengakui melakukan eksperimen lain di pertandingan ini, yakni dengan menempatkan Malacia di kanan dan Shaw di kiri. Hal ini disyukurinya dan berharap bisa dilakukan lagi di sisa musim.

"Kami melakukan beberapa eksperimen di pertandingan ini. Kami memainkan Tyrell [Malacia] di kanan dan Luke [Shaw] di kiri," katanya.

Raphael Varane Ungkap Alasan Cristiano Ronaldo Tidak Jadi Starter di Skuat MU

 

Bek Manchester United, Raphael Varane buka-bukaan seputar kondisi Cristiano Ronaldo di skuat Manchester United. Ia menilai wajar sang penyerang tidak jadi starter karena ia dirasa belum fit.

Setelah digosipkan bakal pindah dari Manchester United, Cristiano Ronaldo akhirnya bertahan di Old Trafford. Ia tidak jadi angkat kaki dari Manchester United dan kini fokus membela MU.

Namun Ronaldo mendapatkan kenyataan pahit. Sejauh ini ia lebih banyak duduk manis di bangku cadangan MU ketimbang menjadi starter.

Varane menilai situasi yang dialami Ronaldo ini wajar dan tidak perlu dilebih-lebihkan. "Ya kita semua tahu Ronaldo bertahan bersama kami," buka Varane kepada TCL Global.

Tidak Ikut Pra Musim

Menurut Varane, wajar jika Erik Ten Hag memarkir Ronaldo. Karena Ronaldo tidak mengikuti pra musim MU.

Varane menyebut situasi ini membuat Ronaldo tertinggal dari rekan-rekan setimnya. Jadi wajar jika ia dicadangkan sang manajer.

"Kita semua tahu bahwa dia tidak mengikuti pra musim kami dan saya rasa sebagai pemain anda tidak boleh melewatkan pra musim, karena ini fondasi kami," ujar sang bek.

Perubahan Besar

Lebih lanjut, Varane menyebut pra musim MU kali ini krusial karena ada perbedaan besar dalam gaya bermain United. Jadi Ronaldo mau tidak mau harus mengejar ketertinggalan itu sebelum bisa menjadi starter.

"Ada perbedaan yang mendasar dengan cara bermain kami di musim ini. Kami tidak lagi memainkan gaya bermain yang sama seperti di musim lalu," terang Varane.

"Ada banyak tuntutan yang harus kami penuhi di gaya bermain kami, jadi ia harus banyak mempelajari permainan baru kami. Selain itu ia juga harus membuat tubuhnya lekas bugar," ia menambahkan.

Jadi Starter

Ronaldo sendiri kemungkinan besar akan menjadi starter pada pertandingan Manchester United pada nanti malam.

Ia akan memimpin lini serang MU saat mereka berhadapan dengan Sheriff Tiraspol.
